Ukrainian culture is an ancient culture that developed over many centuries and had been influenced by many ethnic groups that lived on the territory of modern Ukraine. The written history of Ukraine starts from 9th century with establishment of Kyiv Rus with Kyiv as capital. Over the following centuries it underwent many drastic changes due to numerous wars and tries to concur it. All of it had influence on culture and character of people.
Only in 1991 Ukraine gained independence. Now came the task to save the history of Ukrainian culture and its heritage as well as establish what is modern Ukrainian culture? What’re its senses? Who is modern Ukrainian?
Nowadays culture is managed by Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, but beside the wide range of national, regional and city government institutions, new private ones appear that work successfully with Ministry and independently.
Today artists and performers, through their works, study traditional art, modernize it using new technologies and methods, but they don’t only focus on traditions, they create new progressive types of art that can’t be put in single category and are what we call “cross-sectoral” art. Development of Cultural and Creative Industries in Ukraine is one of the priority directions of “Long Term National Strategy of Culture Development until 2025”. It is estimated that cultural and creative industries produce 4% of Ukrainian GDP, which is average European rate.
